( Guiding Intent: The Challenges and Prospects of Intelligent Web3 Interaction
In June, Paradigm published an article titled "Intent-Based Architectures and Their Risks" on its official website, introducing the concept of Intent) to the public for the first time. Subsequently, intent-related protocols and infrastructure developed rapidly, becoming a hot topic in the cryptocurrency field at the ETHCC conference in July.
Intent is not a new concept. As Mindao, the founder of DForce, stated, the crypto space has been pursuing the ultimate abstraction and automation of operations, from aggregators and centralized exchanges to contract wallets and cross-chain DeFi, all working in this area, along with Chainlink and the recent automated middleware, as well as Telegram bots.
However, intention has brought about new changes. In the past, product interaction was at the core, while in the AGI era, human-computer interaction is at the core. AI / Large Language Model ( LLM ) contains enormous potential for enhancing encrypted interaction.
Top-Down Anoma and Bottom-Up TG Bot
In the past six months, agreements, projects, and infrastructures related to intention have gradually become popular. Rather than reiterating the concepts, we will take a glimpse of the overall picture through two typical cases.
There are many projects related to intent, but the most notable is the Anoma Foundation, which completed a $25 million Series C financing at the end of May 2023. In the context of severe homogeneity in Layer 1, the Anoma Foundation, with intent-centric ( architecture, has received a total of $57.8 million in support from investors for the intent-centric ) full-stack Dapp architecture ( and Namada ) privacy Layer 1 (, ranking 7th in financing for non-token Layer 1/Layer 2.
In a review of Anoma's public presentation at EthCC, founder Adrian Brink stated that Anoma's uniqueness lies in: all interactions begin with intent, which is processed through Anoma's black box architecture ) also known as the magic box (, enabling a core transaction process based on intent-driven interactions.
The Anoma team has identified the underlying pain points of blockchain protocols and reviewed the architectural limitations from Bitcoin's scriptable settlement to Ethereum's programmable settlement, which has led to existing application protocols containing at least one Web2 component, making it impossible to achieve counterparty discovery and resolution. They believe that the intent-centric Anoma architecture is the third generation of Dapp architecture in the evolution of blockchain protocols, allowing users to define ideal outcome states and achieve efficient, customizable privacy transactions at the intent level, ushering in a new era.
Anoma, which features high financing and innovative technological architecture, is currently being developed by a team of 37 interdisciplinary members from Heliax. Although Heliax has made slow progress over the past two years, it has already established a complete innovative ecosystem:
Despite the enthusiasm of institutions like CMCC Global, Electric Capital, and Delphi Digital for Anoma, claiming that the intention-centric architecture has limitless potential, the current top-down Anoma has only laid a good technical foundation and has yet to see any exciting practical applications. On the other hand, TG Bot has opened up the imaginative space for the implementation of intent segmentation scenarios with its on-chain automated trading tools.
Unibot is a Telegram-based trading bot (TG Bot) that allows users to conduct automated DEX trading via Telegram, providing features such as sniper buying, copy trading, DEX limit orders, privacy, and anti-MEV. Unibot replaces the cumbersome interactions of Uniswap based on Intent, offering a convenient DeFi experience. Unibot has also spawned a batch of imitation TG Bots, with the current total market capitalization of the TG Bot sector approaching 200 million USD.
Top-down Anoma is innovation, while bottom-up TG Bot is transformation. Anoma starts from an intent-based underlying architecture, but the team's progress is slow; TG Bot, although it provides users with a new on-chain interaction interface, is not intelligent enough and has many security risks.
The two paths leading to the same destination have a common goal---to simplify user interaction experience and introduce a new programmable and customizable user interaction interface---User Intent Layer (, allowing users to bypass complex on-chain interactions and define transaction status based on intent.
AI is the new UI: Command Interaction vs Intent Interaction
The above two use cases give us a basic understanding of intent. Next, we will explore the changes at the most fundamental level of the AI in the crypto world - the transformation of user interaction interfaces.
The AI paradigm is introducing the third user interface paradigm in the history of computers, shifting towards a new interaction mechanism: users tell the computer what they want, rather than how to do it.
Every revolution in interaction modes throughout history has led to brand new business models. LLM-based generative AI has brought disruptive changes to human-computer interaction, directly transforming the traditional interaction with various software UIs into interaction with the ChatGPT chat window, creating an unprecedented experience. LLM + crypto introduces a new proposition based on intent interaction for the crypto world, where LLM has the potential to make blockchain interactions smarter by discovering and describing user intentions.

The Evolution of the Concept of Intent, Interaction Paradigms, Current Status and Trends
After gaining a deep understanding of the AI intelligence trend behind intentions, we further explore the evolution of the concept of intention. Intention is not a new concept; it has existed since the Web 2.0 era. With the rise of search engines like Google, users can input their intentions, and the search engines provide relevant results to meet their needs.
With the rise of e-commerce platforms like Amazon and eBay, there has been a significant shift in intent-based architecture. Users can now express their intent to purchase products, while the platform takes care of logistics. In early 2017, Gartner released the report "Innovation Insight: Intent-Based Networking Systems," formally introducing the concept of Intent-based Networking). The key is to present users with an interface where they only need to express what they want, and the platform handles the business details.
Intent-based networking is the development trend of network automation and intelligence in the Web2 era. Andrew Lerner, Vice President of Research at Gartner, pointed out in 2017 that intent-based networking will be the next milestone in the field of networking.
During the evolution from Web2 to Web3, the concept of intent in Web3 is not clear, but there are some consensus:
In Web3 intent-based transaction instances, users create intents off-chain, outsource to the parser (Solver) off-chain, encapsulating the complexity of blockchain interactions while retaining full control over the process on-chain for users, thus lowering the threshold for on-chain interactions.
The intention is to simultaneously bring the concept of LLM architecture - intent centric ( architecture centered around user intent ). Currently, the crypto protocols and infrastructure related to intent centric are embedded in the interaction layer between users and Crypto, leveraging LLM to provide a better on-chain interaction experience.
LLM+Crypto brings a new paradigm of human-computer interaction, allowing user intentions to be directly converted into smart contract calls. Users only need to express their intentions as if they were using Apple's Siri, with the help of robots/AI agents/third-party parsers to assist in completing complex on-chain operations. In the future, intention-based Web3 interaction intelligence is expected to significantly reduce the complexity of user on-chain interactions.
An increasing number of Web3 projects are exploring the power of intent. Whether it is intent-based Dapps or intent-based underlying architectures, they unleash the potential of intent from different perspectives. We attempt to outline this rapidly evolving field and categorize it into four major types from an interaction perspective, tracking the latest status and trends:
Infrastructure ( intent-centric intent architecture layer ):
Supporting facilities ( related to intent and related to account abstraction wallets supporting infrastructure ):
Enterprise application ( integrating Dapp's intent infrastructure, API, modular intent layer, specific domain parser ):
The intelligent interface for consumer applications ( user interactions such as wallets, DEX, Web3 AI Agents, smart search engines ):
