White House Crypto Strategy Raises Eyebrows Over Bitcoin Secrecy

  • Despite the heavy anticipation, the White House Crypto Report on Wednesday failed to reveal America’s bitcoin holdings.
  • Bo Hines, the Executive Director of President Trump’s Crypto Council, says the government is focused on building the regulatory and structural infrastructure before fully delving into stockpiling digital assets.

Wednesday’s momentous White House crypto report proved that digital assets now have a central place in the American economy. However, a big mystery remains unsolved: How much Bitcoin does the US government hold, and are they currently purchasing Bitcoin and other digital assets?

Bo Hines, Crypto Council Executive Director, Speaks On Bitcoin Holdings

The White House Crypto Report assessed various agencies’ implementation of President Trump’s executive orders, which opened the doors to legislation like the GENIUS Act, which has been enacted, the CLARITY Act, which is close to enactment, and the Bitcoin Act of 2025, still at the cradle of its legislative journey.

President Trump’s January Executive Order established a US Strategic Bitcoin Reserve to be primarily funded by the Treasury’s holdings of BTC obtained through criminal proceedings. However, when questioned about the updates on a potential Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, Bo Hines, the Crypto Council Executive Director, was rather diplomatic in his answer.

“It is in a class of its own, and everyone recognizes that. But we also wanted to give credence to the work and the developments happening across other ecosystems. And that’s why we have the National Stockpile alongside.”

Hines stressed that the establishment of an SBR “requires some labor” to get ot built properly and create the infrastructure, especially since the vision is being projected for long-term success. The Executive Director also pointed out the need to implement a budget-neutral strategy with the Bitcoin Reserve in a way that serves the common interest of American citizens.

According to Hines, while they want to start acquiring Bitcoin in short order, it is a priority to follow the first digital asset Executive Order, which mandates the creation of a clear and dependable regulatory framework for digital assets.

“We understand the importance of the strategic Bitcoin Reserve,” he added. We are enormous fans of Bitcoin and the Bitcoin community, and we want to deliver for them as well, and certainly we will.”

When specifically asked how much bitcoin the federal government has, Hines politely declined, saying he could not discuss that. Further efforts by journalists to persuade him to provide a broad approximation of US Bitcoin holdings yielded no results.

“There are several reasons why we are not disclosing them at this time,” he said. But his utterances suggest there will be an announcement in that regard soon, once the regulatory and structural infrastructure is in place to constitute a Bitcoin Reserve that will maximise the expected benefits to the American populace.

The US government reportedly holds over 200K BTC, although no official government source has substantiated these figures. The Bitcoin Act of 2025, which seeks to codify Trump’s Strategic Bitcoin Reserve, has yet to pass the Senate Banking Committee.
