The subtlety of Eastern people is often regarded as a virtue, but it is actually a defensive mechanism born out of the survival environment. When expressing true thoughts may invite risks, it becomes an instinct for self-preservation, unrelated to aesthetics or philosophy, and should not be regarded as an honor. Take a look at the Jia family in "Dream of the Red Chamber"; even someone like Lin Daiyu, with her status, must be careful at every step, fearing that she might say the wrong thing or take a wrong step. As for those lower-status maidservants, just having a few intimate exchanges with Baoyu could lead to being dragged out and beaten to death. In such an uncertain environment, being straightforward is dangerous; subtlety is the wisdom of survival. This subtlety is essentially a survival strategy for the weak in the crevices of power. When the environment does not allow people to express themselves safely, and when true thoughts could become weapons against oneself, people naturally learn to restrain their brilliance and hide their true feelings. It has never been a graceful choice made actively, but rather a passive adaptation to helplessness. Packaging such survival instincts as Eastern aesthetics, or even promoting it as uniqueness, is in fact a disregard for the historical context.
