In June, Paradigm's official website published an article titled "Intent-Based Architectures and Their Risks," which first introduced the concept of Intent( to the public. Subsequently, protocols and infrastructure related to intent developed rapidly, becoming a hot topic in the crypto world at the ETHCC conference in July.

Intent is not a new concept. As Mindao, the founder of DForce, said: The cryptocurrency industry has been relentlessly abstracting and automating operations, from aggregators and centralized exchanges to contract wallets and cross-chain DeFi, all of which are engaged in this work, along with Chainlink and the recent automated middleware, as well as Telegram bots.

However, intentions have also brought about new changes. In the past, product interaction was at the core, whereas the AGI era focuses on human-machine interaction. AI/LLM) large language models( contain tremendous potential for enhancing encrypted interactions.

01, Top-down Anoma and Bottom-up Unibot

In the past six months, agreements, projects, and infrastructures related to intentions have gained popularity. This is not intended to explain the concepts in a pedantic manner, but rather to glimpse the overall picture through two typical examples.

Among intention-related projects, the most notable is the Anoma Foundation, which completed a $25 million Series C funding round at the end of May 2023. In the context of severe homogeneity in Layer 1, the Anoma Foundation has secured a total of $57.8 million in support from investors over three rounds, thanks to its intent-centric ) architecture, Anoma ( Dapp full-stack architecture ), and Namada ( privacy Layer 1), ranking 7th in the amount of funding raised in Layer 1/Layer 2 without token issuance.

Reflecting on Anoma's public speech at EthCC, founder Adrian Brink stated that the magic of Anoma lies in: all interactions begin with intention, and the intentions expressed by users are processed through the Black-box Architecture ( Anoma black box architecture, also known as Magic Happens ), which implements the core transaction process based on intention interactions:

  • User Interaction: Users can send transparent, private, or protected intents to Anoma's black box architecture ( intent gossip Layer ).
  • Intent Collection and Matching: The solver( parser of the black box architecture collects intents and performs balance state transitions to achieve matching of counterparties.
  • Transaction Processing: The matched transaction is submitted to the encrypted mempool, and the validator sends the block packaged by the proposer to the execution layer, completing execution and verifying validity, and finally updating the state root.

The Anoma team has identified the pain points at the underlying layer of blockchain protocols and reviewed the architectural limitations that began with the first generation of Bitcoin's scriptable settlement and the second generation of Ethereum's programmable settlement, leading to the current application protocols having at least one Web2 component, which cannot achieve counterparty discovery and resolution. They believe that the intent-centric Anoma architecture is the third generation of Dapp architecture in the evolution of blockchain protocols, allowing users to define the desired outcome state, achieving efficient and customizable privacy transactions at the intent level, and that intent-centric Dapp architecture will usher in a new era.

Anoma, with high financing and a new technical architecture, is currently being built by a 37-member interdisciplinary team from the Heliax development team. Over the course of two years, although the Heliax development team has made slow progress, a complete innovation ecosystem has already been formed.

  • Anoma: A general Dapp architecture centered around intentions, modularly deployable to L1, L1.5, L2, and can be embedded into various EVM frameworks using modular components.
  • Namada: A privacy settlement Layer 1 of the Anoma ecosystem, using a PoS mechanism and designed for asset-agnostic inter-chain privacy, will be compatible with Ethereum and IBC chains in the future;
  • AnomaVM: Simplifying DApp development on Anoma, using Juvix), an intent-centric programming language(, and VampIR), a circuit programming language(.
  • Typhon: Improved Typhon consensus based on Cosmos's Tendermint;
  • Taiga: Provides a composable privacy unified execution environment, defining three types: transparent intent, shielded intent, and privacy intent.

Although many institutions such as CMCC Global, Electric Capital, and Delphi Digital are highly promoting Anoma and believe that intent-centric architecture has unlimited future potential, currently the top-down Anoma has only laid a good technical foundation, and we have yet to see exciting practical applications. On the other hand, TG Bot has opened up the imaginative space for the practical application of intent segmentation scenarios with on-chain automated trading tools.

Unibot is a Telegram-based trading bot )TG Bot( that allows users to automate DEX trading through Telegram, providing features such as sniper buying, copy trading, DEX limit orders, privacy, and anti-MEV. Unibot replaces the cumbersome interactions of Uniswap with Intent, offering a convenient DeFi interaction experience. Unibot has also spawned a number of TG Bot clones, and the total market cap of the TG Bot sector is now close to 200 million dollars.

Top-down Anoma is innovation, while bottom-up TG Bot is transformation; top-down Anoma starts from an intent-based underlying architecture, but the team's progress is slow; although TG Bot provides users with a brand new on-chain interactive interface, it is not intelligent and has many security risks.

The two paths leading to the same destination share a common goal - to simplify the user interaction experience and introduce a new programmable, customizable user interaction interface - User Intent Layer ) User Intent Layer (, allowing users to bypass complex on-chain interactions and define transaction states based on user intent.

02, AI is the new UI: Command Interaction vs Intent Interaction

The two use cases above have given us a basic understanding of intent. Next, it is time to explore the changes at the most fundamental level of the crypto world behind the intent - the transformation of user interfaces.

The AI paradigm is introducing the third user interface paradigm in the history of computing, shifting towards a new interaction mechanism where users tell the computer what they want rather than how to do it.

  • Paradigm One: Batch Processing.
  • Paradigm Two: Command-based interaction design.
  • Paradigm Three: Intention-based Result Specification.

Every revolution in interaction modes throughout history has led to entirely new business models. LLM-based generative AI has brought disruptive changes to human-computer interaction, directly transforming the original interaction with various software UIs into interaction with the Chatgpt chat window, which is an unprecedented interaction experience. Moreover, LLM+crypto introduces a new proposition of intent-based interaction to the crypto world, and LLM will also make blockchain interactions potentially smarter by discovering and describing user intentions.

03, The Evolution of the Concept of Intent, Interaction Paradigms, Current Status and Trends

After deeply understanding the AI intelligent trend behind intentions, we further explore the evolution of the concept of intention. Intention is not a new concept; it has existed since the Web2 era. With the rise of search engines like Google, users can input their intentions, and the search engines provide relevant search results to satisfy those intentions.

With the rise of e-commerce platforms like Amazon and eBay, there has been a significant shift in intent-based architecture. Users can now express their intent to purchase products, while the platform takes care of logistics. In early 2017, Gartner released a report titled "Innovation Insight: Intent-Based Networking Systems" that formally introduced the concept of Intent-based Networking). The key to intent-based networking is to present users with an interface where they only need to express what they want, and the platform will handle the business details.

Intent-based networking is the development trend of network automation and intelligence in the Web2 era. Andrew Lerner, Vice President of Research at Gartner, pointed out in 2017 that intent-based networking will be the next milestone in the field of networking.

In the evolution from Web2 to Web3, the concept of intention in Web3 is not very clear, but there are some common understandings:

  • The definition provided by Paradigm: Intent is a set of declarative constraints that allows users to delegate transaction creation to a specialized network of third-party participants while retaining full control over the process.
  • The definition given by Anoma for the intent-based underlying Dapp architecture: Intent is the message sent by the user to express custom preferences; intent is the constraint that defines what the user allows the system to do, rather than the specific execution path.
  • The definition given by the intent-based trading infrastructure Propellerheads: Intent refers to the part of a trade that requires assistance from others, and it simplifies complex trades by outsourcing the difficult parts to third parties.

In real use cases of intent-based transactions in Web3, users create intents off-chain, outsource them to the Solver( parser), encapsulating the complexity of blockchain interactions for the parser while retaining full control over the process on-chain, thus lowering the threshold for on-chain interactions.

The intention also brings the concept of LLM architecture - intent centric - an architecture centered around user intent. Currently, the crypto protocols and infrastructure related to intent centric are embedded in the interaction layer between users and Crypto, leveraging LLM to provide a better on-chain interaction experience.

LLM+Crypto brings a new paradigm of human-computer interaction, allowing users' intentions to be directly converted into smart contract calls. Users only need to express their intentions like using Apple's Siri, while robots/AI agents/third-party parsers help complete complex on-chain operations. In the future, intent-based Web3 interactions will be intelligent, potentially greatly reducing the complexity of user on-chain interactions.

AI is the New UI. More and more Web3 projects are exploring the power of intent. Whether it is intent-based Dapps or intent-based underlying architecture, they all release the potential of intent from different perspectives. We attempt to organize this rapidly evolving field and categorize it into four major categories from an interaction perspective, while tracking the latest status and trends:

  1. Infrastructure: ( intent-centric intent architecture layer )

    • DappOS
    • Flash 2.0 SUAVE
    • Anoma
    • Cow Protocol
  2. Supporting facilities: ( related to intentions, and supporting infrastructure related to account abstract wallets )

    • ERC 4337
    • Supporting facilities related to account abstraction
    • Supporting facilities related to intentions
  3. Enterprise Applications: ( Integrated Dapp Intent Infrastructure, API, Modular Intent Layer, Domain-Specific Parsers )

    • Trading Parser API
    • Intent API
    • Intent Trading Infrastructure
    • Composable Intent Tool
  4. Consumer applications: ( user-interactive smart interfaces such as Wallets, Dex, Web3 AI Agents, smart search engines )

    • Wallet
    • Dex
    • Intelligent Frontend

The intent-based architecture, supporting facilities, and enterprise-level applications attempt to solve the underlying challenges of intent realization, but infrastructure cannot be developed overnight. The trend of intent consumer application layers is what truly excites people; the evolution of interaction entry points such as wallets and DEX shows the potential for intelligent interaction.

Smart Wallets: ERC-4337 introduces a new (UserOps) user intent layer, where users express their intents, which are then converted into executable signed transactions by the (Bundler). In recent months, the number of ERC4337 users has significantly increased, with ZeroDev, Biconomy, and Safe modular smart accounts being the most motivated to drive AA+ intent. AA+ intent has the potential to usher in the arrival of smart wallets (SCW).

DEX Architecture Transformation: Intent Based Trading ( Intent Based Trading ) aims to improve capital efficiency and user interaction experience. CoW Hooks connect complex actions such as trading, bridging, staking, deposits, etc., while UniswapX has allowed users to sign intent for off-chain matching and on-chain settlement. Similar intent-based DEXs like BananaHq, Brink, basedmarkets are gradually increasing, and a new intent-based RFQ narrative ( SYMMIO ) is unfolding. As more DEXs and aggregators shift to intent-based architecture, the DEX landscape is undergoing significant changes.
